Favorite Turkey Gear - Ground Blinds

If you watch our videos or read our posts, it quickly becomes apparent that I'm a big fan of ground blinds when I'm hunting turkeys. Personally, I like the extra concealment and the ability to move my hands since I use a lot of friction calls. There are a lot of reasons why ground blinds can be very effective in turkey hunting including:

1. Concealment - The eyesight of the wild turkey is legendary and you just can't be covered up enough. Ground Blinds help you hunt areas where concealment is lacking or minimal.
2. Movement - I'm  pretty fidgety and turkeys pick up motion from far distances. Ground blinds allow you to have some basic movement without worrying about being busted. I think they are a necessity when hunting with kids. Kids are naturally fidgety and a bit impatient. Turkey hunting needs to be fun for kids and the ground blind allows them to move, play a game, read a book, until that bird shows up.
3. Mobility - Modern ground blinds are very mobile. They are easily transported on your back and typically weigh around 10 lbs. They can also be set up and taken down in less than a minute.
4. Versatility - I use ground blinds designed for 1 or 2 hunters.
5. Protection - Grounds blinds give you cover when it is raining, snowing, windy, or cold.

Here are some tips for proper ground blind usage:

1. On one of the properties I hunt, I have several ground blinds pre-positioned on known travel corridors. This is a great strategy to use if I need a place move to quickly or if the weather becomes inclement.
2. If you have time, add brush to the outside of your blind. Most blinds have tie downs attached so you can quickly do this.
3. If hunting on the edges of a field, I'll try to position the blind at the end of a point extending into the field. This makes the blind look more natural. I will also place the blind under the shade of a tree. This helps with concealment and temperature.
4.  When deer hunting,  ground blinds make it easy to move to the right wind.  Again, position you blind in good cover an hunt.

Type of Blinds I like for Turkey Hunting.

1.  If hunting by myself, I like to use the Ameristep Chair Blind.  This blind combines a comfortable camp chair with ground blind and weighs only 12 lbs.  It sets up in seconds and has several large openings.

1.  If hunting with 2 people, I like the Ameristep Doghouse.  It's easy to transport and folds from the size of a football into a blind that measures  60 inches square and 68 inches tall.
